Emergency Care Courses

The Emergency Medicine (EM) Training Program is an 18-month (Full Time) competency-based training program for medical officers conducted at The Aga Khan University, Nairobi (AKUH, N).  The training program is aimed to equip the trainee, at the completion of their study, with the theoretical knowledge, practical ability, and interpersonal skills for full time or independent Emergency Medicine practice and qualification to write the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (Dip PEC) examination.

Short Courses

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The Basic Life Support Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.

ADVANCED TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT (ATLS)

The Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) Student Course presents a concise approach to assessing and managing multiply injured patients. The course presents doctors with knowledge and techniques that are comprehensive and easily adapted to fit their needs. The skills described in the manual represent one safe way to perform each technique, and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) recognizes that there are other acceptable approaches. However, the knowledge and skills taught in the course are easily adapted to all venues for the care of patients.

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) is an evidence-based multidisciplinary training program that prepares maternity health care providers to better manage obstetric emergencies. ALSO's evidence-based learning path bridges knowledge gaps and boosts skill sets using a team-based approach, hands-on training, and mnemonics to reduce errors and save lives.

European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS)

The European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS) course is intended to provide training for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals in the early recognition of the child in respiratory or circulatory failure and the development of the knowledge and core skills required to prevent further deterioration towards respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest. The RC (UK) EPLS course is presented in English.

The Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT)

The Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) course is designed to provide healthcare workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to triage sick children when they arrive at a health facility, into those with emergency signs, with priority signs, or non-urgent cases and provide emergency treatment for life-threatening conditions.
