The Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation (EMKF) is proud to mark a significant milestone in its ongoing effort to strengthen emergency healthcare systems in Kenya to save lives through its partnership with the Embu County Government.
Today, Hon. Cecily Mbarire, EGH, Governor of Embu County, officially opened a modern, fully equipped Emergency Department at the Embu Level 5 Hospital. In the same milestone event, the County Government also launched the Embu County Emergency Medical Care Plan, reinforcing a comprehensive and coordinated approach to emergency medical care delivery across the county.
The opening of this purpose-designed Emergency Department is an important step toward ensuring that every person facing a medical emergency has access to timely, high-quality, and lifesaving care. For the approximately 13,000 patients served each month, of whom 30–40% present with emergency conditions—including trauma victims, mothers and newborns in distress, and individuals with acute medical and surgical emergencies—a functional, well-equipped Emergency Department will mean the difference between life and death, disability and recovery.
At EMKF, we firmly believe that emergencies are best managed in purpose-designed and properly resourced Emergency Departments, staffed by trained teams and embedded within well-planned emergency medical care systems. The simultaneous launch of the Emergency Medical Care Plan alongside this facility reflects a strong commitment to system-level strengthening and demonstrates how policy, planning, and infrastructure investments come together to improve patient outcomes.
