Weβre taking our commitment to saving lives to new heights β literally!
Starting today, the EMKF team will embark on an inspiring climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro to promote First Aid Awareness.
Every day during the climb, weβll share updates about our journey alongside essential first aid tips that could save lives in emergencies. Weβre inviting YOU to be part of this movement by following our updates, sharing the content, and helping us spread the word. Together, we can create a ripple effect of lifesaving knowledge!
Day 1 #EMKFOnKili: Preparing for the Journey

π “Training First: Safety Comes First”
Before we set off on our adventure to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro, we spent Day 1 equipping the team with essential first aid skills. Emergencies can strike unexpectedly, even on the trail, and being prepared ensures everyoneβs safety. From handling seizures to treating cuts, our training is about empowering each climber to act swiftly and calmly when it matters most.
π #FirstAidTip:
A sprained ankle can bring a hike to a standstill, but knowing how to treat itβcompression, elevation, and supportβcan keep the adventure alive.

Day 2 #EMKFOnKili: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

π “Every Step is a Lesson”
Distance: 8km | Elevation: 2,720m | Time: ~4 hours
Today, we began our trek from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut. Each step toward the summit is also a step toward building awareness of the importance of emergency care. Just as every skill in first aid matters, every choice we make on this climb reminds us of the impact preparation has in life-or-death moments.
π©Ή #FirstAidTip:
Even a small scrape can derail a journey if not treated properly. Cleaning and dressing minor injuries prevent infection and keep you moving forward. On any hike, first aid is as critical as your gearβstay prepared!

Day 3 #EMKFOnKili: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

πΆββοΈ “Steeper Steps, More Risk”
Distance: 11km | Elevation: 3,720m | Time: ~6 hours
As the trail became steeper and more rugged, we were reminded of how unpredictable mountain climbing can be. A slip on loose rocks or a sharp edge can lead to serious injuries, such as deep cuts or lacerations. In such remote and challenging environments, knowing how to control major bleeding can mean the difference between life and death.
π©Έ #FirstAidTip:
On a mountain, stopping major bleeding is critical when medical help could be hours away. If someone is injured:
1οΈβ£ Immediately apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or dressing.
2οΈβ£ Elevate the injured limb if possible to reduce blood flow.
3οΈβ£ If the bleeding doesnβt stop, layer more dressings over the wound without removing the initial one and apply additional pressure.
4οΈβ£ As a last resort for life-threatening bleeding, apply a tourniquet above the wound.
In high-altitude, low-oxygen environments, the body is already under stress. Quick, effective action to control bleeding ensures the climberβs safety and allows the group to continue the journey.

Day 4 #EMKFOnKili: Acclimatization Day
π “Pause and Prepare”
Today, we took a much-needed break to acclimatise at Horombo Hut, allowing our bodies to adjust to the altitude and reduced oxygen levels. As we focused on hydration and breathing, we were reminded of how emergencies can arise unexpectedlyβeven due to altitude. Preparedness is the cornerstone of safety, whether on a mountain or in everyday life.
π§ #FirstAidTip:
Seizures can occur anywhere, especially in high-altitude environments where reduced oxygen levels may affect brain function. The key is to ensure the personβs safety during the event. Protect them from harm, avoid restraining them, and know what to do afterward. Preparedness empowers you to act with confidence in critical moments.

Day 5 #EMKFOnKili: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

ποΈ “Rising to the Challenge”
Distance: 9km | Elevation: 4,720m | Time: ~6 hours
The landscape transformed as we pushed closer to the summit. The climb is a reminder that lifeβs greatest challenges often require preparation and resilience. First aid isnβt just a skillβitβs the confidence to face the unexpected.
π‘ #FirstAidTip:
A fractured arm or sprain can occur in an instant. Knowing how to create a makeshift sling can stabilise the injury and make a world of difference when help is far away.
π₯ Watch: Making an arm sling

Day 6: Summit Day β Kibo to Uhuru Peak

ποΈ “Conquering Heights, Saving Lives”
Elevation: 5,895m | Time: ~7 hours
After an intense journey, we reached the summit of Africaβs highest peak! Each gruelling step reminded us of the determination it takes to overcome obstaclesβwhether climbing a mountain or responding to an emergency. Supporting our initiatives will ensure more people are prepared to save lives when emergencies occur.
βοΈ #FirstAidTip:
Frostbite is a real risk in freezing conditions. Recognising early symptomsβnumbness, tingling, or discolourationβcan prevent severe damage. Acting quickly to warm affected areas is vital.
π₯ Watch: First aid for frostbite
