EMKF wins Best Oral Presentation at #AfCEM2024

We’re thrilled to announce that the EMKF has won the Best Oral Presentation award at the African Conference on Emergency Medicine (AfCEM) 2024! Presented by Nancy Kinyua, a Spatial Data Scientist collaborating with EMKF, this award-winning presentation showcased EMKF’s innovative study on structuring Kenya’s existing public emergency departments (EDs) into a cohesive system to ensure efficient access to emergency medical care across the country.

The study analyzed travel times to 251 public EDs across Kenya, modelling two critical access times: 60 minutes (the ‘Golden Hour’) and 120 minutes, as per WHO recommendations. Results showed that 89% of the population can reach an emergency department within 60 minutes and 96% within 120 minutes.

EMKF’s analysis underscores the urgent need to strengthen these EDs to enhance emergency medical care quality and pinpoints specific facilities in underserved regions that could be upgraded and staffed to expand access, fostering a more equitable and well-distributed emergency healthcare system across the country.
