Haemorrhage control in penetrating trauma to the neck with a Foley catheter (FC)

A technique for haemorrhage control in penetrating trauma to the neck is to place a Foley catheter (FC) in the wound and inflate the balloon with 5cc of fluid to try to achieve compression of bleeding vascular structures. This has been life-saving in many cases and buys time to get the patient to a trauma or vascular surgeon or in some cases an interventional radiologist.
